State Farm is an agent-distributed mutual insurer with the largest U.S. market share among property and casualty carriers, according to a third-party review (MoneyAtlas, undated). AM Best affirmed its Financial Strength Rating at A++ (Superior) on 18 October 2024, then downgraded it to A+ (Superior), with the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating moving from "aa+" to "aa", on 14 November 2025 after what the rating action described as consecutive years of underwriting and operating losses (AM Best, 2025-11-14; Carrier Management, 2025-11-17).

On service the picture is regional, not national: State Farm was top-ranked in the Northwest in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study but scored below California's leader, Wawanesa, at 678 (Insurance.com, 2026-06). What you pay comes from your state's filed rate program, your limits, your deductible and your ZIP territory.

Rates by Driver Profile

State Farm files auto rates state by state and, within a state, by underwriting company. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, State Farm Fire and Casualty Company and, in Texas, State Farm County Mutual Insurance Company of Texas are separate filers (AM Best, 2024-10-18). There is no single national per-profile premium for the company, and any figure quoted without a state, a set of limits, a deductible and a date does not describe your renewal.

Use the table to see which inputs move your number, then take the figure itself from a quote and from your state's rate filings.

Driver profileWhat moves State Farm's filed rateWhere your actual number comes from
Clean record, long-licensedBase territory rate for your ZIP, chosen liability limits, collision and comprehensive deductible, annual mileageAgent quote plus current filed rate pages for your state's underwriting company
Young driverAge and years-licensed factors, whether rated on a parent's multi-car policy, Steer Clear and Good Student eligibilityQuote the teen as a listed driver on the household policy and standalone — the filed factors differ
Senior driverAge factor, annual mileage, Defensive Driving Course credit where your state's program includes itQuote at your current mileage, then re-quote at a lower mileage band
One at-fault accidentSurcharge schedule in the filed program, claim-free years before the loss, whether state rules allow a first-accident waiverAsk the agent for the surcharge amount and how many years it applies
Poor credit, where permittedCredit-based insurance score tier; California, Hawaii and Massachusetts prohibit its use in auto rating and other states restrict itYour state DOI's rules, plus the quote your agent runs with your consent

Scale gives one real anchor. In Indiana alone, State Farm Mutual Automobile earned $1,197,694,552 in auto premium in 2024 while State Farm Fire & Casualty earned $55,152,608 (Indiana Department of Insurance, 2024) — one mid-sized state, two filers, two rate programs. Treat your quote as an estimate until it is bound.

Coverage Options and Add-Ons

These are the named building blocks State Farm sells through its agent network. The dollar limits and deductible options attached to each are set in your state's filed program and printed on your declarations page — read those before assuming a scenario is covered.

  • Bodily injury and property damage liability — written at your state's statutory minimum at the low end and upward from there. Check the split limits your state DOI publishes; a legal floor is not an assessment of what your assets need.
  • Collision and comprehensive — sold with a selectable deductible from the menu filed in your state. Raising it lowers premium and raises your out-of-pocket on every claim.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) — mandatory in some states, optional and rejectable in writing in others. The rejection rules are state law, not company policy.
  • Medical Payments and Personal Injury Protection — Med Pay is optional in at-fault (tort) states; PIP is required in no-fault states at the benefit level set by statute. Which you can buy depends on which system your state uses.
  • Car Rental and Travel Expenses coverage — pays rental costs while a covered vehicle is repaired, plus certain travel expenses after a covered loss away from home, subject to the per-day and per-claim caps in your filed program.
  • Emergency Road Service — towing, battery, lockout and fuel delivery as a policy coverage rather than a separate membership, limited to the amounts stated in the policy.
  • Rideshare Driver Coverage — an endorsement extending certain personal-policy coverages during app periods, where State Farm files it. Availability is state-specific; ask for the endorsement form number and read it before you drive for a platform.

If diminished value, a named-storm deductible or custom equipment matters to you, ask for the filed form and read the exclusions.

Discounts Available

State Farm's discount programs carry published names; the credit amounts sit inside each state's filed rate pages, which is where your agent reads them from. Ask for the dollar effect on your quote line by line.

Discount programQualifying conditionWhat's published
Drive Safe & SaveEnrol in telematics and share driving data via the app or a connected vehicleCredit depends on recorded driving and your state's filing; ask for the enrolment credit and the renewal credit separately
Steer ClearYoung driver completes the Steer Clear training program and course requirementsApplies to that driver's rated portion only; get the before-and-after premium in writing
Good StudentFull-time student meets the grade requirement, with proof each termApplies to the student's rated portion; ends when grade or enrolment proof lapses
Student Away at SchoolStudent garaged beyond the stated distance from home without a vehicleCredit depends on the distance threshold in your state's filing
Multiple LineAuto written with home, renters, condo or life through the same agentA third-party review states combining auto, home and life through one State Farm agent lowers combined premiums, giving a percentage range not tied to any state or set of limits (MoneyAtlas, undated)
Multiple CarMore than one vehicle insured on the same policy at the same addressApplied per vehicle, so the saving changes if a car leaves the policy
Accident-Free / Good DrivingA stated run of consecutive claim-free years with the companyTied to continuous tenure; resets after a chargeable loss
Defensive Driving CourseCompletion of an approved course, mandated in some states above a set ageWhere state law mandates the credit, the amount and duration are set by statute, not by State Farm

Two cautions. A discount applied to a higher base rate can still cost more than a competitor's undiscounted quote, so compare bound premiums for identical limits and deductibles. And telematics data can raise a renewal where the filing permits it — ask before you enrol.

Complaint Data and Claims Satisfaction

The NAIC complaint index compares a company's share of confirmed complaints to its share of premium, with 1.0 as the expected baseline. Two independent aggregator reviews place State Farm below that baseline (CoverForgeUSA, undated) and below the industry average of 1.00 (CoverageCat, undated) — fewer complaints than its premium volume would predict. Neither source breaks the complaints into categories, so you cannot tell from them whether the issues logged were delays, denials, settlement-amount disputes or policy handling. Your state DOI publishes that breakdown; ask for it.

State-level data is the cleaner comparison. Indiana's 2024 Auto Complaint Index records 31 complaints against State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company on $1,197,694,552 of earned premium, and 2 complaints against State Farm Fire & Casualty Company on $55,152,608 of earned premium (Indiana Department of Insurance, 2024). Counts of that size against premium of that size are what produce a sub-1.0 index — but an index is a ratio across a book of business, not a prediction about your file.

On satisfaction, State Farm was the top-ranked carrier in the Northwest region of the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study (Insurance.com, 2026-06), while in the same study's California table it scored below the region's top performer, Wawanesa, at 678 (Insurance.com, 2026-06). First place in one region says nothing about the adjusters handling claims in another. J.D. Power also changed its scoring scale, lowering average scores industry-wide between the 2023 and 2024 studies (Carrier Management, 2024-06-25), so do not read a decline into an older score set against a 2026 one.

Claims Process Walkthrough

State Farm takes first notice of loss through the mobile app, the claims phone line, or your own agent's office — the last being the part most direct writers do not have. The company does not publish a national average time-to-first-contact or time-to-payout, so treat any such number you see unattributed as unsupported.

  1. Report the loss. File in the State Farm mobile app, by phone, or through your agent. Have the policy number, date and location, the other driver's insurer and policy number, and any police report number ready.
  2. Get the claim number and the adjuster's contact. Note who owns the file and how to reach them directly. If you report through your agent, confirm the claim is logged in the claims system, not just at the office.
  3. Document before you repair. Upload photos of the damage and the scene through the app, and keep the tow receipt, rental agreement and any medical records.
  4. Choose a repair shop. State Farm maintains the Select Service repair network, where the shop coordinates estimate and repair with the insurer and warrants its workmanship. You retain the right to use any shop; the scope of that right is set by your state's repair and steering rules, not by the company.
  5. Work the settlement. The adjuster values the loss, applies your deductible, and on a total loss produces an actual cash value figure. Ask for the valuation report and the comparable vehicles used, and dispute figures in writing.
  6. Escalate if it stalls. State unfair claims practices rules set deadlines for acknowledging and for accepting or denying a claim, enforced by the DOI — those are state law applying to every insurer, not a State Farm service promise. Complaints filed there are what feed the index figures above.

No review can tell you a claim will be paid, paid in full, or paid by a particular date.

Who This Insurer Is Best and Worst For

  • Drivers in the Northwest who want an agent rather than an app queue — State Farm was the top-ranked carrier in that region in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study (Insurance.com, 2026-06), and the agent channel gives you a named person for first notice of loss.
  • Multi-policy households — Multiple Line is the strongest structural advantage, with a third-party review stating that combining auto, home and life through one agent lowers combined premiums (MoneyAtlas, undated). Price the bundle against two separate carriers before accepting it.
  • Families with a student driver — Steer Clear, Good Student and Student Away at School all target the rated portion where young-driver premium concentrates. Ask for the dollar effect of each on the quote.
  • Price-first shoppers in California — State Farm scored below Wawanesa's 678 in that state's table of the J.D. Power 2026 study (Insurance.com, 2026-06), so quote the strong regional competitor alongside it.
  • Anyone weighting financial strength heavily — AM Best cut the Financial Strength Rating from A++ to A+ (Superior) and the issuer credit rating from "aa+" to "aa" on 14 November 2025 after consecutive years of underwriting and operating losses (AM Best; Carrier Management, 2025-11-17). A+ remains in Best's Superior band, but one agency's rating is not a solvency guarantee.

Questions

Does the AM Best downgrade mean my State Farm policy is at risk?

A+ remains within AM Best's Superior band, and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating moved only from "aa+" to "aa" (AM Best, 2025-11-14). A rating is an opinion on ability to meet obligations, not a guarantee of future solvency, and it does not carry over to other agencies' views. The action covered State Farm Mutual Automobile, State Farm Fire and Casualty and State Farm County Mutual of Texas together, so check which of those issued your policy on your declarations page.

Why did my neighbour's State Farm premium differ so much from mine?

Rates are filed by state and by underwriting company, and Indiana's 2024 figures show two State Farm filers side by side — Mutual Automobile with $1,197,694,552 of earned premium and Fire & Casualty with $55,152,608 (Indiana Department of Insurance, 2024). Different filer, different rate pages. Add differing limits, deductible, ZIP territory, vehicle and, where permitted, credit-based insurance score.

Is a complaint index below 1.0 a reason to expect my claim to go smoothly?

No. The sub-1.0 figure cited by aggregator reviews (CoverForgeUSA; CoverageCat, undated) is a ratio of confirmed complaints to premium across the whole book, and those sources give no category split — so you cannot tell whether the complaints concerned delays, denials or settlement amounts. Pull your own DOI's breakdown; every claim is adjudicated on its facts.

Should I enrol in Drive Safe & Save?

Ask two things first: the enrolment credit in your state's filed program, and the renewal credit once your driving data is scored. They are not the same number, and in some filings recorded driving can move the renewal up as well as down. Get both in writing from the agent before you install the app or connect the vehicle.
