State Farm car insurance review

Drivers who want the convenience of a large nationwide network of local captive agents along with usage-based and teen/young-driver discount programs.

Updated October 31, 2026 · Facts checked against statefarm.com, AM Best and the NAIC on October 31, 2026

State Farm is the default choice for drivers who want a local agent they can walk in and see, backed by one of the largest claims operations in the country and coverage available in essentially every state. It pairs the usual coverage menu with a telematics program (Drive Safe & Save) and an unusually well-developed set of young-driver and student discounts, which makes it worth a quote for families with teens. The trade-off is that you buy through State Farm's own exclusive agents, so no one in the room is shopping competitors for you.

Who State Farm is built for

State Farm's pitch is the agent. It sells through a nationwide network of captive (exclusive) agents — people who work for State Farm alone — alongside online quoting and phone service. If you like having a named person in your town handle renewals, policy changes and the first phone call after a crash, that network is the main reason to choose it.

It also suits households with young drivers. Between Steer Clear (for drivers under 25 and new drivers who complete the safe-driving course), the good student discount, the driver training discount for under-21s, and the student-away-at-school discount, there are more ways for a family policy to come down than most carriers offer in one place.

Anyone can apply — there's no military, occupational or membership requirement.

Coverage and programs

The coverage list is complete but conventional: liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured-motorist, medical payments, rental reimbursement and roadside assistance. That covers what most state laws require and what most lenders and lessors demand.

Drive Safe & Save is the usage-based program. You enroll, get an initial discount for signing up, and your ongoing savings depend on how the app rates your driving — braking, acceleration, speed and how much you drive. As with any telematics program, the discount can move in either direction from the starting point depending on how the monitored behavior scores, so read the state-specific terms before you opt in.

Steer Clear is a separate, course-based program rather than a tracking program: a young or newly licensed driver completes the training and the discount follows.

Discounts worth asking about

The itemized list includes:

  • Drive Safe & Save — telematics enrollment plus behavior-based savings
  • Steer Clear — under-25 and new drivers who complete the program
  • Good Student — full-time high school or college students at a 3.0+ GPA, top-20% class rank, or Dean's List/Honor Roll
  • Driver Training — all drivers under 21 on the policy complete approved driver ed
  • Student Away at School — a covered driver under 25 at school who only drives on breaks
  • Defensive driving course — availability and qualifying courses vary by state
  • Vehicle safety and driver-assist features
  • Passive restraint — factory airbags or similar, applied to medical-related coverage
  • Multi-policy bundling — auto with home, renters or life
  • Multiple vehicles in the same household

State Farm's own discount page also gestures at savings it doesn't spell out publicly. If you drive few miles or have been with the company a long time, ask your agent directly rather than assuming it's applied.

Financial strength and complaint record

State Farm carries a rating from AM Best, and the current rating is shown alongside this review from a database we keep current. Worth knowing: AM Best lowered the financial strength rating of the main auto entity by one step in November 2025. It remains firmly within the secure range — this is still one of the most heavily capitalized personal-lines insurers in the US — but it's a reminder that even the largest carriers get re-examined after costly years.

On complaints, we were not able to confirm a current NAIC private-passenger-auto complaint index from an official source, and widely circulated third-party figures disagreed with each other. Rather than publish a number we can't stand behind, the complaint panel beside this review reflects only what we can verify. If it's blank, treat it as unconfirmed rather than as a good or bad result, and check your own state insurance department's complaint data — service quality with an agent-based insurer varies a lot by individual agency.

How to buy

You can start a quote online, call, or go directly to a local agent — all three routes lead to the same captive network. Because State Farm agents sell only State Farm, nobody in the process is comparing it against other carriers for you, so get at least two outside quotes before you sign.

Coverage is available across all 50 states according to third-party availability data; State Farm does not publish a state-by-state list itself, and District of Columbia availability could not be confirmed, so verify by ZIP code. Discount eligibility and the exact mechanics of programs like the defensive driving credit differ by state — the agent is the place to pin that down.

Questions

Can I buy a State Farm policy without using an agent?

You can get a quote and start the process online or by phone, but State Farm's model runs through its own exclusive agents, and you'll generally end up assigned to one for service and claims.

Does Drive Safe & Save guarantee a lower rate?

No. You get a discount for enrolling, then your ongoing savings depend on how the app scores your driving and mileage. The program is designed to reward low-mileage, smooth drivers, so review the state terms before enrolling if you have a long or aggressive commute.

What's the difference between Steer Clear and the good student discount?

Steer Clear is a training program for drivers under 25 or newly licensed drivers who complete coursework and practice driving. The good student discount is based on academic standing — a 3.0 or better GPA, top-20% class rank, or honor roll. A household can potentially qualify for both.

Is State Farm available in my state?

Almost certainly — third-party availability data shows coverage in all 50 states. State Farm doesn't publish an official state list, and District of Columbia availability isn't confirmed, so check by ZIP code before you plan around it.

Should the AM Best downgrade worry me?

Not meaningfully for a personal auto policy. The rating moved down a step in November 2025 but stays well inside the range AM Best considers secure, and the company remains one of the largest and best capitalized auto insurers in the country.

Does State Farm have restrictions on who can buy?

No. There's no military service, employer or membership requirement — anyone can apply, subject to normal underwriting.
