Neither GEICO nor Progressive is cheaper for every driver, and no honest comparison can tell you which will win your quote. What the published data does show is a split on reliability measures: GEICO holds an A.M. Best financial strength rating earned by only 5 percent of property and casualty companies (GEICO, undated), while Progressive's NAIC complaint index runs more than twice as high as expected for a company its size (Insurify, 2026).
Price rank between the two flips by state, zip code, coverage limits, deductible, driving record and — in states that permit it — credit-based insurance score. The only way to settle it for you is two quotes written at identical limits on the same day.
Quick Verdict
Insurify's 2026 comparison publishes both carriers' averages as monthly quote figures, so multiply by six for a six-month comparison, and treat them as national benchmarks rather than your price.
| Measure | GEICO | Progressive |
|---|---|---|
| Full-coverage premium basis (Insurify, 2026) | Monthly average quoted at 50/100/50 liability with $1,000 collision and comprehensive deductibles; x6 for a 6-month figure | Monthly average for a full-coverage policy; confirm it is rewritten at 50/100/50 and $1,000 deductibles before comparing |
| Minimum / liability-only premium basis (Insurify, 2026) | Monthly liability-only average, 1 vehicle, no physical damage coverage | Monthly liability-only average, 1 vehicle, no physical damage coverage |
| NAIC Complaint Index (Insurify, 2026) | Scored on the 0 to 5 index, where lower is better | More than 2x the complaint volume expected for its market share |
| A.M. Best financial strength | Rating held by only 5% of property and casualty companies (GEICO, undated), with a long-term issuer credit rating also published (Insurify, 2026) | A.M. Best financial strength rating published for a carrier founded in 1937 (Insurify, 2026) |
| Composite score | Insurify Quality (IQ) Score, 2026 | Insurify Quality (IQ) Score, 2026 |
On the two reliability measures that are directly comparable, the gap favours GEICO: the 5 percent A.M. Best tier (GEICO, undated) and a complaint index scored on the 0-to-5 scale, against a Progressive complaint index running at more than double the expected level (Insurify, 2026). A financial strength rating is an opinion on claims-paying ability at the date it was issued; it is not a guarantee of solvency, and a rating from A.M. Best does not carry across to any other agency's scale.
Price Comparison by Driver Profile
Insurify's 2026 data breaks GEICO's liability-only quotes out by driving record and benchmarks each one against the national average. Progressive's published liability-only figure in the same comparison is a single blended average, not a per-record breakdown — so for the profiles below, the GEICO column can be read against the national average while the Progressive column can only be settled by quoting it yourself.
| Driver profile | GEICO (Insurify, 2026) | Progressive (Insurify, 2026) | Which is cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean record, 1 vehicle, liability-only | Monthly average published against the national liability-only average | Covered by the single blended liability-only monthly average | Decide on 2 live quotes at matched limits |
| 1 speeding ticket | Monthly average published against the national liability-only average | Covered by the single blended liability-only monthly average | Decide on 2 live quotes at matched limits |
| 1 at-fault accident | Monthly average published against the national liability-only average | Covered by the single blended liability-only monthly average | Decide on 2 live quotes at matched limits |
| DUI on record | Monthly average published against the national liability-only average | Covered by the single blended liability-only monthly average | Decide on 2 live quotes at matched limits |
| Teen driver added | Monthly teen-driver liability-only average published separately | Covered by the single blended liability-only monthly average | Decide on 2 live quotes at matched limits |
Three things move these numbers more than the company name does:
- Your state's rating rules. Whether the state is no-fault or at-fault/tort changes which coverages you are buying in the first place, and several states restrict or ban credit-based insurance scoring that others allow.
- Your territory. Two zip codes in the same state can sit in different rating territories with different loss costs.
- The underwriting company. Both insurers write through multiple subsidiaries, and a surcharged record can land you in a different company with a different filed rate than a clean record would.
A quote is an estimate produced from the information you entered. It can change at binding once the carrier pulls your motor vehicle record, claims history and — where permitted — credit-based insurance score.
Coverage and Policy Differences
"Full coverage" is not a defined product. The Insurify 2026 benchmark prices it as 50/100/50 liability with $1,000 collision and comprehensive deductibles, which tells you how much the label can hide: the same car quoted at a $500 deductible, or with 100/300/100 liability, is a different policy at a different price.
Endorsement terms are filed state by state, so the only version that governs your claim is the form attached to your declarations page. Ask both carriers for these three in writing before you compare prices.
| Feature | What to confirm with GEICO | What to confirm with Progressive |
|---|---|---|
| Accident forgiveness | Whether it is earned by years claim-free or purchased, how many accidents are forgiven per policy term, and whether it survives a mid-term switch | Same 3 points, plus whether forgiveness is available at all in your state and whether it applies to the first at-fault loss only |
| Rental reimbursement | The daily cap and the per-claim aggregate, in dollars, and whether rental applies after a comprehensive loss or collision only | The daily cap and per-claim aggregate in dollars, and whether the limit is written per day or as a lump sum |
| Rideshare / delivery use | Whether an endorsement is filed in your state and what hours of app-on driving it covers | Whether an endorsement is filed in your state and what hours of app-on driving it covers |
Two more comparisons worth making at the same time: the collision and comprehensive deductibles each quote actually used, and whether either policy pays diminished value after a repair. Neither carrier's coverage of any specific scenario — rideshare, a named-storm deductible, diminished value — can be assumed from marketing copy. Read the endorsement form.
Claims Process Compared
Insurify's 2026 comparison publishes a J.D. Power Claims Satisfaction Study score for GEICO alongside the J.D. Power Auto Insurance Study average, which lets you see where GEICO's claims score lands relative to that study average rather than relative to an adjective. For Progressive, the same comparison publishes a J.D. Power rating score and the company's ranking in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study.
The complaint indexes are the harder number of the two. Progressive's NAIC complaint index sits at more than twice the level expected for its premium volume (Insurify, 2026). GEICO's is reported on the same 0-to-5 NAIC index, where lower is better (Insurify, 2026). Complaint indexes count confirmed complaints against market share; they do not measure how long a payout takes.
For state-level detail, go to your own regulator. The Indiana Department of Insurance publishes a statewide Auto Complaint Index (2023) listing NAIC company codes, premium volume and complaint counts per insurer, including GEICO entities — which is how you find out whether the national index matches the picture in the state where your claim would actually be handled. Most state insurance departments publish something equivalent.
Separate what belongs to the insurer from what belongs to your state:
- Insurer-specific: direct repair networks and any repair guarantee written into the network agreement, whether photo estimating is offered, and how claims are routed between the carrier's subsidiaries. Ask whether the repair guarantee is for as long as you own the vehicle and whether using the network changes your deductible.
- State-specific: unfair claims settlement practices rules set the deadlines for acknowledging a claim, accepting or denying it and paying once agreed. Those deadlines vary by state, apply to both carriers equally, and are published by your DOI.
No one can tell you a claim will be paid, paid in full, or paid within a given number of days. Claims are adjudicated individually on the facts and the policy language.
Who Should Choose Which
- If financial strength is your deciding factor, lean GEICO: its A.M. Best rating is held by only 5 percent of property and casualty companies (GEICO, undated), with a long-term issuer credit rating published alongside it (Insurify, 2026).
- If the volume of regulatory complaints worries you more than price, lean GEICO: Progressive's complaint index runs more than twice the expected level, while GEICO's is scored on the 0-to-5 NAIC index where lower is better (Insurify, 2026).
- If you have a DUI, an at-fault accident or a speeding ticket on record, get the GEICO quote first for benchmarking: Insurify (2026) publishes GEICO's liability-only average for each of those records against the national average, so you can see whether your quote is in line before you take it to Progressive.
- If you are adding a teen driver, start with GEICO for the same reason — Insurify (2026) publishes a teen-driver liability-only monthly average for GEICO, giving you a reference point no blended average provides.
- If Progressive has already quoted you cheaper on "full coverage," ask Progressive to rewrite it at 50/100/50 with $1,000 collision and comprehensive deductibles (the Insurify 2026 benchmark) before you switch, so you are comparing the same policy and not a thinner one.
- If you live in Indiana, check the Indiana DOI Auto Complaint Index (2023) by NAIC company code before choosing either: GEICO entities are listed there with premium volume and complaint counts, which tells you more about local handling than a national figure does.
Switching, adding or dropping coverage carries consequences specific to your situation — a lapse in coverage, a lost longevity discount, or a gap where you have no physical damage coverage on a financed car. Confirm the new policy is bound and effective before you cancel the old one.
Questions
Is Progressive's high complaint index a reason to rule it out?
It is a reason to look closer, not an automatic no. Progressive's NAIC complaint index runs more than twice as high as expected for its premium volume (Insurify, 2026), but that index counts confirmed complaints against market share and says nothing about payout amounts or timelines. Check your own state's DOI complaint report for the specific Progressive underwriting company named on your quote.
What exactly does GEICO's A.M. Best rating mean?
It is A.M. Best's opinion of GEICO's ability to meet its insurance obligations, in a tier earned by only 5 percent of property and casualty companies (GEICO, undated). Insurify (2026) also lists a separate long-term issuer credit rating for GEICO. Neither guarantees future solvency, and neither transfers to another agency's scale.
Why do GEICO's published averages differ by driving record but Progressive's don't?
Insurify's 2026 data breaks GEICO out into five separate liability-only averages — clean record, speeding ticket, at-fault accident, DUI and teen driver — each benchmarked against the national average, while Progressive appears as a single blended liability-only monthly average. That is a difference in how the data is published, not evidence that Progressive doesn't surcharge records.
Does Progressive's J.D. Power claims ranking apply to my state?
Progressive's ranking in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study (Insurify, 2026) is a study result, usually reported by region or nationally, and it does not describe how your individual claim will be handled. Your state's unfair claims settlement practices rules set the actual acknowledgment and payment deadlines, and those apply to Progressive and GEICO alike.
If GEICO quotes me a lower full-coverage price, am I getting the same policy?
Only if the limits match. The Insurify 2026 full-coverage benchmark is 50/100/50 liability with $1,000 collision and comprehensive deductibles; a GEICO quote built on a lower liability limit or a higher deductible will look cheaper for reasons unrelated to the company. Compare the declarations pages line by line, not the headline price.
